The best way to help in most International disaster situations is to defer to the expertise of local Rotarians.
I found out yesterday that the Rotary Club of Marlow had been in touch with the Rotary Club of Monrovia, Liberia’s capital city and are raising funds to help…
A quick search would indicate that the current death toll is around 4,000 which would imply over 500 people a week are now dying from a virus that has been known for 38 years but until recently was dormant, why is that?
The following is a letter posted on the Rotary Club of Marlow website and the images I have taken from Montovia’s Facebook site…
ROTARY CLUB OF MARLOW FUNDRAISING FOR EBOLA IN LIBERIA
Ebola in Liberia
The Ebola virus had by August 20th 2014 killed 1350 people in West Africa, and since then the number has continued to rise. Liberia, followed by Sierra Leone, is the worst hit. These are the reported number – reality may be much worse.
The crisis has led to panic, rioting and fear. The hospitals are not equipped to cope; many have no gloves, no masks, no fresh water, even Doctors are dying!
Does anyone know what to do?
We, the Rotary Club of Marlow, have been in touch with the Rotary Club of Monrovia, Liberia’s capital city. They, the Monrovia Rotary Club, have commenced action with vigour, good sense, and with a real knowledge of what is needed. They found, can you believe, that the largest hospital in Monrovia has not even one standard Ebola protective garment.
By August 16th, the Rotary Club of Monrovia have given local hospitals 3000 surgical gloves, 10,000 examination gloves, 100 buckets with faucets, and petrol slips for the rapid response vehicles. Further, they have embarked on a global campaign to raise USD $100,000.00 for this cause. They are engaging with local churches to raise funds, and to distribute the required items.
We, the Rotary Club of Marlow, will donate 100% of what we raise in this campaign to the Rotary Club of Monrovia, who will in turn use 100% of that money directly for this cause.
Could you raise funds through bucket collections, local events, etc? If you can, Brian Jonson President of the Rotary Club of Marlow will be delighted to help you co-ordinate your efforts – 01628 890 999 or jonson@sky.com .
Thank you for your support.
