The Rotary Club of Windsor and Eton (WERC) was founded nearly 80 years ago and has met ever since at the Castle Hotel Windsor on Monday lunchtimes from 1pm to 2pm. There are 35 members of all ages from 40 to 80.
WERC is a Service Club (Rotary motto ‘Service Above Self’), and it’s primary function is to provide Charitable Service to local good causes. In addition it is usually the Rotary Club leading the charge when there are International Disasters. WERC is gratified that Rotary is trusted by the public who know that every penny given will get where it is supposed to go. Internationally Rotary is most famous for funding the almost total eradication of Polio from the world together with Bill & Melinda Gates.
A Rotary meeting isn’t all about how money can be raised. Most meetings are based on an inexpensive lunch followed by a speaker on any topic that takes a member’s fancy. Typically at a recent meeting one of the members gave a talk on a Victorian antecedent, whilst at a subsequent business meeting our proposed extension and refurbishment of the Spencer Denney Workshop for Help the Aged was discussed where not only are we going to fund the works but various members will be applying hands on skills to help with the budget.
The work of the Club is well balanced with a vibrant social side, which is further enhanced by the successful achievement of common goals. The key word for anybody contemplating joining is fun.
WERC enjoys the impressive backdrop of Windsor and all that entails, and we are privileged to be able to use places like the Castle and Alexandra Gardens for our annual Summer Fayre and famous Duck Race. We have trusted links with the all the schools and promote events like Youth Speaks and an annual Careers Fair.
We are able to mount an impressive array of public events eg – prestige car Rallies in the Castle reviewed by the Queen and Prince Philip and Choral events in St Georges Chapel.
It’s an exciting time to be a member of this Club, even more so for the next few years, and clearly we are going to be very busy, so we could always do with some help from interested persons who think like us that they have something to give back to the Community we live in.
On 27th October 2014 at the Castle Hotel starting at 6.00pm we are holding a new members evening , why not come along and learn more and enjoy a glass of wine and canapés. If you would like to attend please let me know.
