Gunmen have attacked the offices of French magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris, killing 12 people including the editor and celebrated cartoonists.
It was interesting to hear on one UK journalist comment on the news last night that terrorism works… if people are shot for their opinions they are likely to keep their mouths shut.
In the west we pride ourselves on our right to free speech… this has to be the way…
But how do we maintain it?

It’s a good question and a complex problem. What we must resist is delving into the same medieval mentality of these thugs. For them violence and intimidation are the answer because they are too stupid to use words to further their cause. They must be treated as the common criminals that they are. They are not religious. They have no moral compass that any religion has. They are in fact using the most primitive method of influence known to man. It won’t work and it never will because freedom is too hard won. These fanatics wish to go backwards to the days of oppression. They delude themselves.

I could not agree more Stuart. Our freedoms today were very hard won. These criminals must not win. It is down to every single one of us to stand up for free speech and democracy and to make our voices be heard. We should not be silent and complacent. I am concerned however that there may be an anti-muslim backlash which would be very sad as I am quite certain most muslims regard this violent crime to be just that and to be against the teachings of Islam.
